The Birth of Creation in Digital
Recent Happenings at CiD
The birth of CiD v4.0 was thus inevitable. I bought a starter package including a domain name and installed PostNuke (PN). I had tried out PHP-Nuke and GeekLog, but PN had the features that I needed, namely an integrated forum and a Gallery to which members could submit their own work. The system was the best I had used so far. Its downfall is that it is too bulky and difficult to customize efficiently. It also had so many features that it was confusing to most people. Having gone through so many upgrades, I was loath to go through another and was prepared to stick with PN and customize it even more for the best support of a graphics community.
It was about this time that a hacker obtained root access on my host. Thankfully all he did was put up index files in each account protesting the impending war against Iraq; great way to get my sympathies. Ironically, my host did the most damage. While repairing security holes, they accidentally made my account point to another account when accessed by http. Despite numerous help desk tickets and a couple phone calls, it remained this way for several weeks. By the time it was finally worked out, I was already on another host.
Initially I installed the most recent backup of CiD v4.x, but my traffic was down 90% and only the hard core members returned. Now I had the opportunity to build CiD from the ground up and was energized to do so; thus CiD v5.0. This time I wanted less of a giant portal and more of a community where members could fully participate. PhpBB was (and is) the only board that comes with a community gallery that brings quality integration to the board. Using various mods, some written by phpBB members and some by myself, I brought the board to what it is now.
I was now satisfied with the software, however I needed to find a new host. I contacted John from Quality-Web-Hosting.net too see if we could work out a deal. CiD is now running on his server and is working superbly!
It has been a long journey to where CiD is currently and I am sure there is more to come. Right now the hard core CiD?ists and I are planning the next major leap to CiD v6.0. This will work to complete the Community vision. Hopefully this will be the last major upgrade for a long while, but who knows? We all need to continually improve towards perfection, right? ;-)
