Almost immediately after becoming a Christian, and even before, we may hear things like, "God has a wonderful plan for your life." or "God has a specific direction (or mission) for you. You just need to seek Him, to get the map (or His mission direction)." Christian seminars, colleges, books, media, and church pulpits usually talk about this plan as if it were specific, individualized, and personal to each of us.
Driven by the belief that an individual plan is out there for each of us, some people (like me) can focus too much on trying to pray-seek-listen to God to discover it. The results are not always positive. I personally existed for many years (subconsciously and then consciously) between being afraid of letting God down by not getting His will for me exactly right and being frustrated (sometimes with Him) at not being able to clearly discern His plan (mission) for my life or to make it happen once I did think I knew it.
While earnestly seeking the pearl of knowing God's specific mission for my life I began neglecting a greater treasure; the treasure of fulfilling God's purpose for my life.
For me, taking what Jesus said to heart, my purpose is to:
Love the Lord my God with all my heart, with all my soul, and with all my mind. And to love my neighbor as myself.
--(Noting that my wife and my children are my closest neighbors.)
This purpose is most important in my life. I now spend 99.9% of my efforts on this purpose. This is my measure for success. All other life missions pale in comparison. Amazingly enough all other life missions easily and powerfully get accomplished.
